Fever in a child is rarely an illness in itself — it is the body’s natural response to infection. Knowing when to treat at home and when to seek help makes a real difference.
Measure temperature with a digital thermometer rather than by touch. For most children, paracetamol dosed by body weight (15mg per kilogram per dose) is the safest first step, with no more than four doses in 24 hours.
Keep the child hydrated, dress them in light clothing, and avoid cold sponging, which can cause shivering and raise core temperature. Seek medical attention immediately if the child is under three months old, is unusually drowsy, has a rash that does not fade under pressure, or if the fever persists beyond three days.
Always use a paediatric suspension with a measuring cup rather than a household spoon — dosing accuracy matters far more than most parents realise.
